About this book

Winnie-the-Pooh, first published in 1926, is a collection of ten linked stories written by A. A. Milne for his young son, Christopher Robin. The book follows a bear of very little brain and his companions through the Hundred Acre Wood, a small woodland where everyday problems take on a gentle scale. Pooh searches for honey, Eeyore loses his tail, Piglet worries about Heffalumps, and Christopher Robin organizes an expedition to find the North Pole. Each chapter is self-contained but shares the same cast and quiet pace.

The animals in the stories were based on real stuffed toys belonging to Christopher Robin Milne. Milne's wife gave each toy a distinct speaking voice at home, and the illustrator Ernest H. Shepard drew the characters from these actual figures, lending them personality through posture and expression rather than exaggeration. The result is a book where character comes through in small, specific moments: Eeyore's persistent gloom, Owl's shaky spelling, Piglet's nervous loyalty.

The ten chapters move between minor adventures and social occasions, from a surprise birthday to a flood to a farewell party. Milne writes with deliberate simplicity, using repetition and invented words like Expotition to echo the way young children speak and think.
