Finn Family Moomintroll

Finn Family Moomintroll is the third book in Tove Jansson's Moomin series, set in the fictional Moominvalley as spring arrives and the household wakes from hibernation. Moomintroll, along with his friends Snufkin and Sniff, discovers a tall black top hat on a mountaintop. They bring it home without knowing it belongs to the Hobgoblin, a powerful figure who travels the skies on a black panther. The hat turns out to have strange transformative powers: anything placed inside it changes into something else entirely.

The story follows a series of episodes sparked by the hat's unpredictable magic. Eggshells become small clouds, Moomintroll himself is temporarily changed into an unrecognizable creature, and the Moominhouse fills with a tropical jungle that grows from planted seeds at impossible speed. Each transformation creates confusion, humor, and occasional alarm among the valley's eccentric residents, including the Snork Maiden, the Hemulen, and Thingumy and Bob, a pair of small beings who speak in a scrambled language and carry a mysterious suitcase.

Jansson wrote and illustrated the book in Swedish, though she lived in Helsinki, Finland. The original Swedish title is Trollkarlens hatt, which translates roughly to The Magician's Hat. Her pen-and-ink drawings accompany the text throughout, giving shape to the round, hippo-like Moomins and the cluttered warmth of their home.
