Manx Fairy Tales is a collection of traditional stories from the Isle of Man, first compiled by Sophia Morrison in 1911. Morrison gathered tales that had circulated among Manx-speaking communities for generations, organizing them around figures familiar in island folklore: fairies, giants, witches, and ghosts. The Isle of Man sits in the Irish Sea between Britain and Ireland, and its oral traditions reflect contact with both Celtic and Norse cultures over many centuries.
Morrison was a central figure in efforts to preserve Manx culture at a time when the Manx language was in steep decline. She served as secretary of the Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh, the Manx Language Society, and spent years collecting stories directly from native speakers. The tales she recorded carry details of island life, local geography, and supernatural beliefs specific to Man rather than borrowed wholesale from Irish or Scottish sources.
The original 1911 edition included illustrations accompanying each story. Several modern reprints exist as facsimile editions, reproducing the text and images from the original but sometimes carrying minor imperfections from the source copy. The book remains one of the few published collections dedicated entirely to Manx folklore.
