Story

Four English children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, are sent to stay in a professor's large country house. Lucy, the youngest, steps through an old wardrobe into a snow-covered land called Narnia, where she learns the country has been held in endless winter by the White Witch. When she returns, no one believes her. One by one, the others follow.
Narnia's frozen landscape begins to change with the arrival of Aslan, a great lion whose return the White Witch fears. The story follows the children through shifting loyalties, betrayal inside their own family, and the question of what must be surrendered to break the Witch's hold. The wardrobe works as a plain physical boundary between an ordinary house and a world running on different rules.
C. S. Lewis published the book in 1950 in the United Kingdom, the first Narnia story to appear in print, though many later editions place it second in an internal chronology of seven volumes. Its wartime opening reflects a period when children were moved from British cities to the countryside, and moral allegory sits alongside the fantasy.
