In the Café of Lost Youth is set in a shadowy corner of 1950s Paris, where writers, drifters, petty criminals, and heavy drinkers share the same dim rooms. At the centre is Louki, a young woman who appears in a café and quickly draws the attention of everyone around her, present yet elusive. Four narrators, Louki among them, offer separate versions of who she is.
Modiano arranges these perspectives so that they circle the same events without settling on one truth. The story is shaped by gaps and contradictions, where memory and identity shift depending on who is speaking. The book draws partly on the real-life circle around Guy Debord, a French writer and filmmaker, and the photographer Ed van der Elsken recorded some of those figures.
The novel is short and compressed, moving between voices in brief sections. Each narrator adds detail about Louki while revealing habits of their own, including what they choose to remember and what they let slip away. Alongside them, the book places brief sketches of historical figures who moved through the same streets and cafés.
