Father Goriot, published in 1835, is set in Paris during the Bourbon Restoration, the period after Napoleon's fall when the old monarchy briefly returned to power. The story takes place largely inside the Maison Vauquer, a run-down boarding house on the Left Bank where a mixed group of tenants share meals and keep secrets. Among them is the elderly Goriot, a retired vermicelli merchant who once held considerable wealth but has spent nearly everything on his two daughters. Both have married into high society and seem reluctant to acknowledge the father who sacrificed so much for them.
Eugène de Rastignac, a young law student from a provincial family in southern France, also lives at the Maison Vauquer. Watching Goriot's situation and meeting figures from the Parisian upper world, he begins to understand how money, status, and personal connections shape life in the capital. Another boarder, the mysterious Vautrin, offers Rastignac a darker shortcut to success, forcing the young man to weigh his own moral limits against his ambitions.
The novel belongs to Balzac's large series La Comédie humaine, a network of linked novels and stories that aimed to map French society across classes, professions, and regions. Father Goriot is one of the earliest entries in that project and introduces several characters who reappear in later volumes.
