My Brilliant Friend is the first of four novels by Elena Ferrante, set in a poor neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples beginning in the 1950s. It follows two girls, the studious narrator Elena Greco and her fierce, unpredictable friend Lila Cerullo, from their first meeting at age ten through adolescence. Their friendship is intense and uneven, shaped by rivalry, admiration, and the pressures of growing up in a place where violence and poverty limit what girls can become.
Ferrante populates the neighborhood with a large cast of secondary characters, families whose rivalries and alliances form a tight social web around the two protagonists. The novel tracks how education begins to separate Elena and Lila, offering one of them a possible route out of the neighborhood while the other faces early adulthood on different terms. Class, gender, and the slow transformation of postwar Italy all press against the friendship without reducing it to a single theme.
The book is the opening volume of what became a four-part series spanning roughly sixty years. It was originally published in Italian as L'amica geniale. Ferrante writes under a pseudonym, and her true identity has been a subject of public speculation for decades.
