Harry Potter has spent the first ten years of his life in the household of the Dursleys, his aunt and uncle, who lavish attention on their own son Dudley while treating Harry as an unwelcome burden. The household at number four, Privet Drive is disrupted when mysterious letters addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment begin arriving for Harry. The Dursleys confiscate every one. On Harry's eleventh birthday, a large man named Rubeus Hagrid appears with news that changes everything: Harry is a wizard, and a place is waiting for him at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
At Hogwarts, Harry encounters a world organized around four school houses, each represented by a different animal: lion, eagle, badger, and snake. He learns to fly on broomsticks and plays Quidditch, an aerial sport central to school life. He forms close friendships and, alongside them, accumulates enemies. The school is full of hidden corners and concealed dangers, and Harry gradually learns that his own past is tied to darker events than anyone has told him.
J.K. Rowling's first novel was originally published in the United Kingdom under the title Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The American edition, retitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, introduced the story to readers across the Atlantic.
