Jean-Marie Medza, the narrator, has just failed his Baccalauréat exam and returns home expecting humiliation. Instead, he finds that as a scholar his prestige is immense, and he is charged with the duty of traveling to Kala, a remote village, to secure the return of a young woman who has fled her lazy, demanding husband. In Kala, while awaiting the return of the woman to the village, Medza stays with his uncle, who exploits the young man's celebrity status to have him showered with gifts, most of which his uncle keeps. Medza is the focus of a series of amusing incidents, becomes unexpectedly married, and eventually completes his mission - but then has to return home to deal with the anger of his ambitious father.

Jean-Marie Medza, the narrator of Mongo Beti's comic novel Mission to Kala, has just failed his Baccalauréat exam and dreads returning home to face his family in late colonial Cameroon. To his surprise, his status as a young man with some formal education gives him unexpected authority. The elders of his village send him on a diplomatic errand: travel to the remote village of Kala and persuade a young woman to return to her husband, whom she has left.
In Kala, Medza must wait for the woman to come back from yet another trip, and his uncle takes full advantage of the delay. Presenting his nephew as a prodigy of learning, the uncle arranges for Medza to be consulted, celebrated, and showered with gifts, quietly keeping most of them for himself. A string of comic situations follows, including an unexpected marriage that Medza stumbles into almost by accident.
The novel is set against the social tensions of Southern Cameroon under colonial rule, but its energy comes from smaller, more personal collisions: between formal schooling and village knowledge, between family expectation and individual confusion. When Medza finally completes his errand and returns home, the question of what his education actually means to him and his father remains unresolved.
