Malgudi Days is a collection of short stories by R. K. Narayan, set in the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi. Written across a span of nearly four decades, the stories follow ordinary people going about their daily lives: an astrologer reading palms by the roadside, a snake charmer, a postman on his rounds, a vendor selling pies and chapatis. Narayan builds each portrait from small, specific domestic details rather than broad drama.
Malgudi itself functions almost as a character. Though entirely imagined, the town carries the rhythms and textures of real small-town India, with its markets, temples, and familiar social patterns. Narayan once observed that in India a writer need only look out the window to find a character and, with that character, a story. The remark captures the quiet method behind these pieces, where plot tends to grow from personality rather than from external events.
This edition includes an introduction by Jhumpa Lahiri and was published as part of a series marking the centennial of Narayan's birth.
