Soseki Natsume wrote I Am a Cat in serial form between 1904 and 1906, during a period of rapid social change in Japan. The novel is narrated by a stray kitten with no name, taken in by a schoolteacher and his household. From this low vantage point, the cat observes the daily lives, arguments, pretensions, and small vanities of the people around him. The setting is urban, educated, upper-middle-class Meiji-era Japan, a society caught between older traditions and Western-influenced modernity.
The cat is not a heroic or sentimental figure. He has never caught a mouse, contributes little to the household, and views the humans with dry, detached amusement. Soseki uses this outsider perspective to satirize the social habits of his own class and era, picking apart polite conversation, intellectual posturing, and the gap between how people present themselves and how they actually behave. The humor is sharp and often pointed, closer to social comedy than to gentle animal fiction.
Soseki published the novel while working as an English literature lecturer in Tokyo. The book was his first major work of fiction and established his reputation as a writer. Its structure is episodic, built from loosely connected scenes and observations rather than a single continuous plot.
